Connor Simpson (University of Sydney) will be speaking in the algebra seminar. We will go out for lunch after the talk---all are welcome to join! When: 12-1pm Friday October 17 Where: SMRI Seminar Room (Macleay Building A12 Room 301) [ROOM CHANGE DUE TO BOARD TALK] Title: Reflections on tori Abstract: Toric varieties are a rich, yet tractable class of spaces, whose geometry can be understood via the combinatorics of polytopes. We'll give an introduction to these spaces from the algebreo-geometric and topological viewpoints, then explain some recent work that describes quotients of toric varieties by finite reflection groups (joint with Colin Crowley & Tao Gong).
